Bandits abduct 13 LG employees in Zaria

Armed bandits have abducted thirteen employees of Zaria Local Government in Kaduna State. The incident occurred at 5pm on Monday, November 8, between Giwa and Zaria, while the victims were travelling on a bus. The victims include four men identified as Dalhatu Awai, Suleiman Lawal Zailani, Nura Abdullahi and Umar Shehu. The female victims are Deborah Mugu, Halima Tabari, Fatima Abdullahi, Hafsat Zakari, Maryam Fatika, Huwaila Fate, Hajara Mohammed, Kuluwa Isah and Amina Sulaiman. Reacting to the abduction, the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, Kaduna State Students Wing, said that most of the victims are parents of their fellow students in higher institutions. Aminu Jangeme, a Zamfara businessman who escaped from kidnapper's den in 2020 has been abducted again. The businessman who was abducted in his village in 2020 along with six others, escaped and fled to Gusau town with members of his family during ransom negotiation. Jangeme who returned to his village not knowing that the bandits had been looking for him, was reportedly re-abducted on his farm on the Gusau-Dansadau Road last Thursday. Punch reported that his elder brother, Malam Adili who confirmed the incident, expressed fear that the bandits might not release him in time because they had been looking for him since he fled. Adili said; “They (bandits) had been trying to abduct him again since the time he escaped and now that he is in their hands, nobody can tell when they will release him."

9 burnt to death, 11 others injured in fatal road accident in Niger state

Nine persons were killed and 11 others injured in a road accident that occurred along Kutigi-Mokwa Road in Niger State. The accident involving two trailers, a Sharon commercial vehicle and Volkswagen Golf car occurred at about 10 am on Monday, November 8. Seven of the victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition in the accident. One of the trailers was said to have been loaded with planks and the other loaded with varieties of goods were heading for Minna, Niger State capital before the accident happened.. The Sharon vehicle which was conveying passengers, mainly traders and heading for the weekly market day in Kudu village was said to have rammed into one of the trailers and before it burst into flames immediately. The remaining vehicles were also said to have rammed into the burning vehicles. The Nigerian Senate has passed the harmonized version of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The bill was passed on Tuesday November 9, following the resumption of plenary by members of the National Assembly after a 3-weeks recess and the harmonization of the bill by the Senate and the House of Representatives. Before the bill was passed, the senate had set-up a 7-man conference committee to meet with members of the House of Representatives Conference Committee to harmonise the differences in the Senate and House versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The constitution of the conference committee by both chambers of the national assembly became necessary following the minor differences in the passed bills by both sides, especially with respect to the mode of operation of electronic transmission of election results and the powers of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC). The Nigerian senate has condemned the invasion of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili's home by security operatives. The senate reacted to the home invasion after Senator Betty Apiafi representing Rivers west, drew the attention of her colleagues to it. Apiafi noted that no arrest has been made after the invasion and the findings have not been made public either. She said; “There is no information on the arrest said to be made." Opeyemi Bamidele, chairman of the committee on judiciary on his own part said those found culpable must face the law. Bamidele said; “No one was at ease with what has happened. Victor Umeh, a chieftain of APGA who arrived at the LGA headquarters with other party members, was turned back by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division as supplementary election holds in the local government area. INEC had on Monday morning, November 8 declared the Anambra state governorship election inconclusive due to the inability of INEC officials to conduct elections in Ihiala due to security challenges. A supplemental election has been scheduled to hold in the local government today to enable 148,000 eligible voters to cast their votes. As the election commenced, APGA chieftain, Victor Umeh visited the local government headquarters but was turned back by the security agents. According to the GOC, it was inappropriate for him to be there at the time. "You are not supposed to be here,” the GOC screamed at Umeh who insisted that he was there “to ensure things go well".

EX SERVICE CHIEFS CONFIRMED AS AMBASSADORS

  The nomination of   the immediate past service chiefs as non-career ambassadors, was on Tuesday February 23 confirmed by the senate   despite criticisms.    Though Senate Minority Leader Enyinaya Abaribe faulted this by questioning the nomination and confirmation of the ex-service chiefs when the Senate had on three different occasions called for their sack and also wondered why the petitions against the former service chiefs were dismissed without explanations,  Senate President Ahmad Lawan maintained that their confirmation cannot be held back because they are on a different assignment.   Lawan who further stopped further debate on the case, added that the former service chiefs had served the country to the best of their abilities.

  Niger state's Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello has ruled negotiation with bandits amid an influx of bandits who enter into the state through the Benin Republic border.    Addressing State House reporters after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on the rising insecurity and infrastructural decay in the state, Bello said he ruled out negotiating with the criminals because they don’t keep to any agreement. He added that he once reluctantly negotiated with the bandits, but it never produced any positive result.   The Governor who alleged that “the bandits are Fulanis that have no one to control them even their parents", said the menace of bandits in the state had become a source of worry to the government.   Bello revealed that the bandits come to the state through the neighbouring Kaduna and Katsina states, and also added that local security had been helpful in curtailing the activities of the criminals who are invited by some locals.   He

  12-year-old Blessing Ineh, who reportedly went missing in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta, has been found alive inside a soakaway.    It was gathered the the young girl was last seen on New Year Day after she was sent on an errand by her parents.      She was found inside a soakaway located behind her family house on Tuesday, January 5, after a child heard her whimpering and raised an alarm.    According to reports by popular Warri online news portal, Warri Aproko, the young girl was abducted by three men, allegedly stabbed on the back and her throat slit before she was dumped in the soakaway.    Her body was found covered in white chalk which seems to suggest that it was a case of attempted ritual murder by suspected internet fraudsters.   The victim is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.      Meanwhile, it was further learnt that Blessing revealed that her neighbour identified smply as "General" was one of the men behind the dasta

  The First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has announced the appointment of Yemisi Edun as its acting managing director.   Edun takes over the running of the bank from the Managing Director, Adam Nuru, who on Tuesday, January 5, proceeded on leave amid allegations of marital infidelity involving him and a former staff of the bank, Moyo Thomas. There are allegations that Moyo's estranged husband, Tunde Thomas, 45, died on December 16, 2020, from a heart attack after battling with depression upon discovering that the two children from their marriage were allegedly fathered by Mr Nuru. TEACHER FAKES HIS OWN KIDNAP TO COLLECT N250,000

  The police in Kwara state have arrested a 24-year-old teacher, Medinat Ibrahim,  for allegedly faking her own kidnap just to extort N250, 000 from her father.   Medinat, who was paraded alongside two other suspects identified as Amudalat Wahab (30) and Hammed Lekan (28) said she committed the crime to raise money to settle a debt which accrued from the monthly contribution at the private school where she serves as a teacher.   She alleged she was maltreated by her stepmother who also caused friction between her and her father, adding that she decided to fake her own kidnap to get money to offset debts she incurred during COVID-19 lockdown.   I teach in a private school where I was paid N15,000. 14 KILLED IN GHASTLY AUTO CRASH

  At least fourteen persons were killed in an accident along Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State on Wednesday afternoon, January 6.    It was gathered that the accident involved a bus and a truck conveying cement from Obajana occurred at Old Akpata village.     According to an eye witness account, the accident occurred as a result of dangerous overtaking by the driver of the bus that was heading to Kabba. NIMC LAGOS RESUMES STRIKE ACTION

  Members of staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Lagos State have gone on strike.   According to the striking workers, they decided to take this action to press home their demand for better welfare packages from the government. According to the workers, the recent increase in the number of visitors at their different offices and stations for registration of National Identification Number (NIN) has caused a lot of stress for the workers. The aggrieved workers say they need to be paid more for conducting the exercise which he described as an extra duty.   They also accused the government of not putting in place measures to ensure their safety while carrying out their duties. They decried the lack of protective kits at the office, saying they could get infected with COVID-19 as they attend to hundreds of residents daily.

KANAYO O. KANAYO BLASTS FOLLOWERS

Kanayo lost patience with his followers who joked about him being involved in money rituals.   The actor shared a video of him paying homage to Ezinne Victoria Okonkwo Anyanwu, the mother of veteran actor Chika Anyanwu, as she turns 100.     Some followers responded by making inappropriate jokes about him using the older woman as a human sacrifice in "ogoni".
