Bandits abduct 13 LG employees in Zaria

Armed bandits have abducted thirteen employees of Zaria Local Government in Kaduna State. The incident occurred at 5pm on Monday, November 8, between Giwa and Zaria, while the victims were travelling on a bus. The victims include four men identified as Dalhatu Awai, Suleiman Lawal Zailani, Nura Abdullahi and Umar Shehu. The female victims are Deborah Mugu, Halima Tabari, Fatima Abdullahi, Hafsat Zakari, Maryam Fatika, Huwaila Fate, Hajara Mohammed, Kuluwa Isah and Amina Sulaiman. Reacting to the abduction, the Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, Kaduna State Students Wing, said that most of the victims are parents of their fellow students in higher institutions. In a statement signed by the Kaduna State Coordinator, Jamilu Musa, the students warned that they would embark on a mass action to shut down Zaria if visible action is not taken to secure the release of the captives in seven days. This is not the first time Sakee will be eyeing a post exclusively reserved for a woman. Aminu Jangeme, a Zamfara businessman who escaped from kidnapper's den in 2020 has been abducted again. The businessman who was abducted in his village in 2020 along with six others, escaped and fled to Gusau town with members of his family during ransom negotiation. Jangeme who returned to his village not knowing that the bandits had been looking for him, was reportedly re-abducted on his farm on the Gusau-Dansadau Road last Thursday. Punch reported that his elder brother, Malam Adili who confirmed the incident, expressed fear that the bandits might not release him in time because they had been looking for him since he fled. Adili said; “They (bandits) had been trying to abduct him again since the time he escaped and now that he is in their hands, nobody can tell when they will release him."

9 burnt to death, 11 others injured in fatal road accident in Niger state

Nine persons were killed and 11 others injured in a road accident that occurred along Kutigi-Mokwa Road in Niger State. The accident involving two trailers, a Sharon commercial vehicle and Volkswagen Golf car occurred at about 10 am on Monday, November 8. Seven of the victims were said to have been burnt beyond recognition in the accident. One of the trailers was said to have been loaded with planks and the other loaded with varieties of goods were heading for Minna, Niger State capital before the accident happened.. The Sharon vehicle which was conveying passengers, mainly traders and heading for the weekly market day in Kudu village was said to have rammed into one of the trailers and before it burst into flames immediately. The remaining vehicles were also said to have rammed into the burning vehicles. The Nigerian Senate has passed the harmonized version of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The bill was passed on Tuesday November 9, following the resumption of plenary by members of the National Assembly after a 3-weeks recess and the harmonization of the bill by the Senate and the House of Representatives. Before the bill was passed, the senate had set-up a 7-man conference committee to meet with members of the House of Representatives Conference Committee to harmonise the differences in the Senate and House versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The constitution of the conference committee by both chambers of the national assembly became necessary following the minor differences in the passed bills by both sides, especially with respect to the mode of operation of electronic transmission of election results and the powers of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC). The Nigerian senate has condemned the invasion of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili's home by security operatives. The senate reacted to the home invasion after Senator Betty Apiafi representing Rivers west, drew the attention of her colleagues to it. Apiafi noted that no arrest has been made after the invasion and the findings have not been made public either. She said; “There is no information on the arrest said to be made." Opeyemi Bamidele, chairman of the committee on judiciary on his own part said those found culpable must face the law. Bamidele said; “No one was at ease with what has happened. The government should take appropriate steps to ensure that those culpable are brought to book,” Bamidele said. “There is need to protect the sanctity of the judiciary.” Adding to Senator Apiafi's motion, Senator Thompson Sekibo who represents River north-east maintained that the findings on the invasion must be made public. Victor Umeh, a chieftain of APGA who arrived at the LGA headquarters with other party members, was turned back by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division as supplementary election holds in the local government area. INEC had on Monday morning, November 8 declared the Anambra state governorship election inconclusive due to the inability of INEC officials to conduct elections in Ihiala due to security challenges. A supplemental election has been scheduled to hold in the local government today to enable 148,000 eligible voters to cast their votes. As the election commenced, APGA chieftain, Victor Umeh visited the local government headquarters but was turned back by the security agents. According to the GOC, it was inappropriate for him to be there at the time. "You are not supposed to be here,” the GOC screamed at Umeh who insisted that he was there “to ensure things go well".
